Hopalong & Second Chance Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to eliminate the euthanasia of cats and dogs through rescue, spay/neuter and education programs.

Owner Surrender Assistance

The dogs and cats listed on this page are being cared for in their owners' homes because they’ve been found as strays, or are being surrendered by their owners. While we generally only take in dogs or cats from shelters, Hopalong & Second Chance Animal Rescue may be able assist in the placement of these animals.

However, we strongly encourage people to explore every possible alternative to surrendering their pets.

All Owner-Assist dogs and cats are required to be spayed/neutered and have current vaccinations before they can be listed with us. The individuals caring for these dogs or cats are fully responsible for their adoption and subsequent consultation. Since these animals are not in our program, we make no representations with regard to these animals.

Please fill out the Dog Owner Surrender Form and submit it to our office if you need assistance finding another home for your dog. You may contact us at info@hopalong.org or 510-267-1915 ext 101 to discuss a cat you need to surrender.

Name: Chance Mix/Breed: Shepherd mix Sex/Age/Weight: S/Female, 5 years Personality: Chance is a friendly dog who'll make a wonderful companion. She loves people, is curious and playful, and gets along well with other friendly dogs. She loves to take walks and play ball in her yeard when not outside exploring the neighborhood. Chance is smart and could be trained quickly, but she wasn't taught much in her first 5 years. (She'd spent them with another dog as a "yard dog."). She has a sweet, trusting disposition. She does have a chronic ear problem (but really cute ears) which will require consistent care. Chance shows interest in cats, but hasn't been tested, so we do not know how well she would get along with them. But, she responds to instruction, so chances are she'd be OK with supervision. Name: Lincoln Mix/Breed: Sharpei/American staffordshire Sex/Age/Weight: N/Male, 9 years, 88 lbs Personality: Lincoln's family is moving out of the area and cannot take Lincoln with them. Lincoln is a great family dog...he loves children and has lived with other dogs and cats (he has a tendency to get a little excited so would need initial correction.) Name: Fluffy Mix/Breed: Maine Coon mix Sex/Age/Weight: N/Male, 3 years Personality: Fluffy is very curious and just loves being groomed. He's a gorgeous powder puff cat who loves, loves, loves to cuddle and be curled in your lap as close as he can be. Fluffy will reach out for you with his white paw which makes your heart just melt. This gentle, playful and confident cat is looking for a wonderful human companion with or without other cats. Fluffy is extremely sweet; a cotton candy cat!! Name: Powder Mix/Breed: Siamese mix Sex/Age/Weight: S/Female, 1 year Personality: Powder is a Lynx Point Siamese mix vixen who is a year old. She's a little coy at first, but then you will find her rolling around your feet and affectionately rubbing up against your legs. Powder is a beauty who enjoys being groomed. Name: Brodie Mix/Breed: Shepherd mix Sex/Age/Weight: N/Male, 10 months Personality: Brodie is a dashing black and brindle shepherd mix. He is reserved at first when meeting you, but is so affectionate and gives many kisses once he knows you! He's really into exploring and treats. Name: Rufus and Rusty Mix/Breed: DSH Sex/Age/Weight: S/Female, 9 years, N/Male, 9 years Personality: Rufus and Rusty! Rufus is the gray and white tabby male tabby on the left. Rusty, his sister, is the orange tabby on the right side of the picture. These lovable felines desperately need a new home. Their current owner is leaving the country to care for her fiance who was recently shot and paralyzed and cannot take them with her. They are wonderful cats, approximately nine years old, have no health problems, and would make wonderful companions for someone giving them their home. Name: Max Mix/Breed: Domestic medium hair Sex/Age/Weight: N/Male, 8 years Personality: Max is in very good health. He cuts a striking figure with his thick dark black with brownish tones coat, muscular configuration and green eyes. Max is tremendously social and affectionate. He will curl up in your lap or snuggle against you on the couch. He greets you in the morning, keeps tabs on you during the day, and sleeps on your bed at night. Max likes to be petted, enjoys his daily brushing, and loves to observe the world from a window perch. Max will talk to you about the important issues of the day: a door needs to be opened so he can go outside, the litter box needs cleaning, meal time is approaching, playtime has arrived. He is a calm and mellow guy, but can be surprisingly playful. Sometimes he will zip around the place and chase every ball with the energy of a kitten.
