Volunteer Positions

Are you interested in joining hundreds of dedicated animal lovers and making a positive difference in the lives of homeless animals? Then consider joining the Hopalong Animal Rescue team! Giving your time is an incredibly important resource. Volunteers are an integral resource for us, and play important roles in the day to day operations of Hopalong.

Pet Chauffer (Urgently needed!) – Requires valid driver’s license
  • Provide transportation of animals from shelters to our offices & vet clinics, take them to mobile adoptions & vet appointments
  • Although the majority of transporters usually drive the Hopalong mini van, some transports require use of personal vehicle
  • Pick up donated supplies and food; may involve lifting/carrying
Mobile Adoption Coordinator (Urgently needed!)
  • Set up, staff and take down mobile adoption sites
  • Help pair adoptable animals with their forever homes
  • Interview potential adopters, approve & deny adoptions
  • Ensure safety of animals at event
  • Organize supplies, manage volunteers & animals at event
Special Events Planning (Urgently Needed!)
  • Help research and coordinate future events including our major annual event
  • Work with Executive Director on outreach to community groups willing to partner with Hopalong
  • Generate the interest of donors, potential adopters, and future volunteers by representing Hopalong at public events
Fostering Cats, Kittens, Puppies, and Adult Dogs (Urgently Needed!
Hopalong depends on our foster families to provide homes for animals waiting for adoption. For more information, please see our foster page.
Cat or Dog Handler at Adoption Events
  • Assist Mobile Adoption Coordinator
  • Handle dogs and cats of all sizes, breeds, ages & activity levels
  • Talk with the public and assist in adoption counseling and promotion of Hopalong’s mission
Adoption Counselor
  • Match potential adopters with dogs and cats, ensuring that the personality and needs of the animal matches the temperaments, lifestyle, and experience of the potential owner(s)
  • Educate adopters about training, licensing, and more
  • Pass information on to staff
  • This position can be done from home; requires phone & email access
  • Get the word out about Hopalong’s adoption, fostering and volunteer programs)
  • Keep various social media platforms updated
  • Research new venues for outreach
  • This position can be as narrow or as broad as you would like: students encouraged to consider!
  • Can be done from home
Office and Admin Support
  • Filing and photocopying
  • Phone calls
  • Stuffing envelopes for large mailings
  • Laundry
  • Cleaning crates, litter boxes
  • Help with corporate solicitations, business donations, and community involvement
  • Assist with planning fundraising events
  • Assist at the fundraising events by serving food, checking in guests, etc.
Cat Cuddler
  • Note: this position is available at our Oakland office
  • Give physical attention (cuddling) to any cats being temporarily housed at an adoption site
  • Make sure the cat’s environment is clean and comfortable. Feed and scoop litter if necessary
  • Flexible hours, weekends included
Database Entry
  • Enter medical, adopter, and foster information into our database
  • Put together and mail out adoption packets
  • Talk with veterinary clinics if we need medical paperwork from them
  • Requires intermediate to advanced computer skills and the ability to learn new software
Foster Screener
  • Call potential fosters to provide guidelines and expectations for Hopalong’s cat and dog foster programs
  • Make sure potential fosters are a good fit for the foster program
  • Communicate information with Volunteer Manager
  • This position can be done from home or in the Hopalong office, requires phone and email access
